Let’s take a look at each team’s strengths and weaknesses to better understand their respective chances:
Italy:
Strengths: Italy have been incredibly solid defensively and have yet to concede a goal in the tournament. Their midfield is also very strong and has controlled games, dictating the pace and rhythm. Finally, they have been incredibly clinical in front of goal, scoring 7 goals in 3 games.
Weaknesses: Italy’s attack has sometimes looked a bit blunt and wasteful. While they have managed to score goals, they could have easily had more if they had been more clinical. There are also questions over whether they can maintain their intensity and discipline throughout the entire tournament.
Spain:
Strengths: Spain have been playing some of the most attractive football in the tournament, with their intricate passing and movement causing problems for every team they’ve faced. They have also had plenty of chances and have been very creative in the final third.
Weaknesses: Spain have been wasteful in front of goal and have only managed to score 6 goals in 3 games, despite having plenty of opportunities. They have also looked shaky defensively, particularly in the game against Croatia where they conceded three goals. Finally, they have a lack of a clinical striker, which could hurt them in the knockout rounds.
Prediction:
It’s a tough call, but I think Italy will edge this one. Their defence has been superb and I think they will be able to nullify Spain’s attack, while also being able to create chances of their own. It could be a tight game, but I’m going for a 2-1 win for Italy.
